Inspired by characters and storylines created by Jules Verne, the streaming series Nautilus retells the classic tale from Captain Nemo’s point of view: an Indian Prince robbed of his birthright and family, a prisoner of the East India Mercantile Company and a man bent on revenge against the forces that have taken everything from him.
Shot on Australia’s Gold Coast, the series is a testament to the hundreds of talented Australian crew, creatives and cast who helped bring the project to life. Read on below to learn about some of the series’ Australian contributors.

Australia provided the ideal environment for Nautilus in terms of studio and locations. Additionally the tax incentives in the form of the Australian Government’s Location Incentive (now legislated as the 30% Location Offset), Screen Queensland’s Production Attraction Strategy, and the Gold Coast Local Government’s Screen Attraction Program, were all vital to financing the series.
Queensland fit the brief perfectly with a variety of locations – substituting for tropical jungle islands in the South Pacific, 1858’s London, Indonesian palaces and more exotic locations – found within a convenient radius to the studios, near an international airport, and with an enviable lifestyle.
The support of the City of Gold Coast via the Gold Coast Film Commission was also crucial in both providing location permit support and introductions between key stakeholders and the production. Having hosted over 60 major international productions, the Gold Coast was a natural choice for the series’ creators in large part thanks to the local crews’ expertise with marine and water tank based shoots.
Additional support was provided with Post, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) completed in New South Wales, South Australia, Western Australia and also Queensland with the support of the each states respective Post, Digital and VFX rebates.
