Docklands Studios becomes Australia’s first fully GreenPower film studio

As the global screen industry looks for ways to reduce its environmental impact, Docklands Studios Melbourne is proud to be Australia’s first major film studio to be powered entirely by green energy.

Docklands Studios recently switched to 100% renewable energy through government-accredited GreenPower which sources energy from sun, wind, water and biofuel.

This means the entire complex’s energy usage — including six sound stages, production offices, mess halls, workshops and studio administration — is now powered by 100% renewable energy.

Studio CEO Antony Tulloch tells Ausfilm that Dockland’s green credentials are a boon for the whole industry. “The switch to renewables is a simple way to help productions reduce their carbon footprint at a time when there’s rising awareness and accountability about the environmental cost of making film and TV content.”

“Embedding sustainability into every aspect of our day-to-day operations and helping productions to do the same is a priority for us at Docklands Studios Melbourne.”

“We’re making our facility as efficient as possible – keeping tabs on consumption while installing lower-energy lighting, heating, ventilation and air conditioning across the facility.”

Docklands Studios is also helping to reduce the emissions of the wider production sector, as a seed funder and member of Sustainable Screens Australia (SSA).

SSA is an industry-led and funded initiative to embed sustainability into all aspects of screen production, developing tools such as carbon calculators and training based on a best-practice model from Britain’s BAFTA albert, the leading screen industry organisation for environmental sustainability.
