Showrunner Tony Ayres and Production Designer Ben Morieson take us behind the scenes at Dockland Studios Melbourne where the complex and spectacular cave set was built. Equipped with giant water tanks, flooding simulators, dump tanks and rain machines, the life-size set seamlessly blends into the on-screen world of Evelyn Bay.
“Because it was too dangerous to film in real sea caves, we had to construct our own in a studio, inspired by Eaglehawk Neck. This combination of real and constructed locations helped us achieve the epic scale necessary to bring The Survivors to life, providing a visually stunning backdrop that complements the intricate plot and character development.”

“Most of the time, these kinds of resources are just out of the reach of Australian television,” he continues. “To make a world that is completely credible, believable, and actually looks really good is crucial to our storytelling.”
The Survivors is produced by the award-winning team at Tony Ayres Productions (Fires, Clickbait, Stateless), which is backed by Matchbox Pictures and Universal International Studios, a division of Universal Studio Group. Additional support by VicScreen through the Victorian Production Fund and the Victorian Digital Screen Rebate and production support from Screen Tasmania.
