WESTERN AUSTRALIA’S GENEROUS POST-PRODUCTION REBATES BRING US FEATURE FILM, DEVIL’S PEAK TO SANDBOX POST

Producers from around the globe are taking advantage of Australia’s generous post-production rebates, with local Western Australian Post house, Sandbox recently completing post-production for US feature film Devil’s Peak.

Devil’s Peak producer Jamie Hilton credits Western Australia’s post-production rebate program, highly favourable exchange rate, and deep pool of talent as critical factors that made his decision to conduct post-production work with Sandbox an easy choice.

“Doing post in Western Australia on a US feature seemed like a strange choice but with a 50% rebate [30% Federal PDV and a State PDV of 20% on the first A$500k of WA spend] and a sub 70c exchange rate, it is unbeatable value. To add to that, Sandbox made everything easy; especially dealing with our international producers and distribution partners. Their work across VFX, grade, DI and delivery was world class and the time zone difference was actually very efficient as notes were addressed overnight with no downtime at all.”

Directed by Perth’s Ben Young (Hounds of Love, Extinction), Devil’s Peak stars Robin Wright, Billy Bob Thornton and Hopper Penn and was released in the US on February 17, with a digital release on February 24.

Produced by Curmudgeon Films and Thruline Entertainment, with See Pictures overseeing Australian production, alongside Australian Executive Producer Amanda Morrison, Devil’s Peak is set in North Carolina’s Appalachian Mountains and is the screen adaptation of David Joy’s novel titled Where All Light Tends To Go. The story follows eighteen-year-old Jacob McNeely who is torn between his meth-dealing kingpin father and leaving the mountains forever with the girl he loves.

“I’m fortunate enough to have worked in post houses all over the world and in my experience, Sandbox are as good as it gets, which is why I brought Devil’s Peak from the US to Perth for completion.”

Ben Young, Director

Specialising in high-end film and television post-production, Sandbox can now add the US feature film Devil’s Peak to their impressive list of growing post-production credits.

Sandbox has previously handled post-production for Young’s 2016 feature film Hounds of Love and worked with him creatively across TVC campaigns.

Led by Managing Director Grady Habib and Senior Post Producer Louise Bertoncini, Sandbox provided services for the film’s post-production including VFX, colour grade, online edit and delivery.

Fox, produced by Zig Zag and New York-based film and television studio and streaming network, FilmRise.

Additional recent small-screen post-production work has seen Sandbox complete the colour grade and delivery of Shipwreck Hunters, produced by VAM Media and Terra Australis for Disney Plus.
