South Australian PDV work is dazzling massive audiences across China, with principal VFX in Guan Hu’s smash hit action film The Eight Hundred (Ba Bai) provided by Adelaide’s award-winning Rising Sun Pictures (RSP).

Centring on the true story of the 1937 Battle of Shanghai between Chinese battalions and the invading Japanese army, the action-packed war epic from Huayi Brothers Media and Haining Seventh Image Movie & Media Co Ltd. is a certified blockbuster, grossing more than $300 million at the box office in China alone.

Working in collaboration with BangBang Pictures, Beijing, RSP’s overall VFX Supervisor Tim Crosbie and the RSP team contributed scores of richly detailed, seamless VFX to support the film’s riveting combat scenes, all set around a massive warehouse complex near the centre of Shanghai.

The Eight Hundred has set a new standard for production value in Chinese cinema, with RSP creating monumental set extensions to capture the action, including more than two kilometres of 15 metre high green screen around the perimeter of the replica warehouse set.

RSP’s work on the film was supported by the South Australian Post Production, Digital and Visual Effects (PDV) Rebate, which provides a 10% rebate on expenditure on post production, digital and visual effects work undertaken in South Australia on eligible productions.

The South Australian Government Rebate, which compliments the Australian Federal Government’s Australian Screen Production Incentive Producer Offset (40%) and PDV Offset (30%) streams, is administered by the South Australian Film Corporation.
