NBCUniversal’s international hit La Brea is coming back to Melbourne, Australia’s home of premium television drama, to film its highly anticipated second season.

Creator, writer, and showrunner David Appelbaum and the series’ producers, Universal Television and Keshet Studios, again chose Victoria, Australia’s most southern mainland state, following a fantastic experience on season one.

“Australia proved to be the ideal setting to bring La Brea to the small screen, and we’re thrilled to return to this amazing country for season two,” said Universal Television President Erin Underhill.

The production will once more make the most of the diverse locations close to downtown Melbourne and the city’s ability to double for Los Angeles due to its wide, palm-tree-lined streets. It will also reteam with Victoria’s skilled and experienced crew and screen businesses, including in virtual production.

Production of La Brea Season 2 in Melbourne will again be overseen by NBCU-backed Victorian company, Matchbox Pictures.

“La Brea is flagship international television and said the series return is a credit to the creative and production team. It is the type of project that proves and extends the capacity of the Australian screen industry,” said Chief Operating Officer of Matchbox Pictures Matt Vitins.

The new La Brea series was attracted to Victoria through the Australian Government’s Location Incentive program and to Victoria through the Victorian Screen Incentive.

La Brea is one of many high-profile projects currently underway in Melbourne and regional Victoria. The Greatest Showman director Michael Gracey is gearing up to film Better Man, a biopic on British pop star Robbie Williams; Sarah Snook is set to star in horror/thriller Run Rabbit Run following her recent Golden Globe Award win for Succession; and The Dressmaker director Jocelyn Moorhouse is back in Victoria for Savage River, a gripping crime drama series with Golden Globe-nominee Katherine Langford (Thirteen Reasons Why, Knives Out).
