DNEG returned as the lead visual effects partner for the second season of Amazon MGM Studios’ Citadel, with the studio’s Sydney team playing an essential role in delivering some of the series’ most technically ambitious work.

The Sydney studio contributed 55 shots across the project, working on several major sequences that combined cinematic world-building with complex simulations and photoreal visual effects. Among the team’s standout contributions was the Stolen BMW sequence, which featured a fully CG car crash using CG BMW and VW ID Buzz assets. The sequence was carefully crafted to deliver a completely believable and emotionally impactful “shock moment” for audiences.

DNEG Sydney also contributed to all of the burning man shots featured throughout the Farmhouse Attack and Father Flashbacks sequences, including the cottage attack in Episode 202. The haunting vision of Mason’s father burning alive in bed became a recurring visual motif throughout the season, requiring close collaboration with on-set teams, extensive reference gathering, and the use of a full LED suit worn by the actor to achieve an ultra-believable, photoreal result.

Beyond these key sequences, the Sydney team delivered a broad range of visual effects work, including intricate digi-double work, full CG environments such as the Frankfurt motel street, and a fully CG outer space sequence featuring Earth and a network of satellites self-destructing in orbit.

The studio also contributed to an ambitious 80-second “oner” sequence, seamlessly blending drone and steadicam photography through invisible transitions to create the illusion of a single continuous shot.
