For Netflix’s global hit Thrash, Melbourne delivered everything the filmmakers needed to bring the film’s storm-ravaged world to life. In this Ausfilm Insider, Producer Scott Lumpkin and VFX Producer Ken Wallace, alongside cast members Phoebe Dynevor and Djimon Hounsou, reveal why filming in Australia surpassed expectations.
From Melbourne’s versatility as a location stand-in to its food, culture and welcoming spirit, the cast and crew quickly felt at home. Praising their filmmaker first approach, the team found more than just sound stages at Docklands Studios Melbourne. A car park was transformed into a flooded town complete with a purpose-built outdoor water tank, submerged sets and large-scale practical effects – creating the perfect environment for the film’s waterlogged world.
Supported by the Australian Government’s Location Offset and VicScreen’s Victorian Screen Incentive, Thrash showcases the creativity, infrastructure and collaboration that makes Australia such a great production partner.
